Oooo! Keane and the Gufs are playing Summerfest! I missed Keane at the Rave last year because of a headache, and I've been kicking myself for it since.
I took lots of pictures, though most of them didn't turn out. Will post a few when I'm awake. Big lots of thanks to everyone that wished me a happy birthday, and an even bigger thanks to anyone coming to my party. Biggest thanks of the evening go to Williamz0r and Kathy-face for the concert company. Hope you both had as great a time as I did! <3
In brief summary, State St. effing rocks, waiting in line for 2 hours is no problem with newspaper-smacky fun, Ben Gibbard is T3H ultimate OMG shiz <3, and I really really need sleep.
My dad and I drove to Brookfield Square hoping to jump-start the Trooper and drive it home. We did manage to get the thing started; we let the engine run for a couple minutes, then Dad let me drive it home. It coasted just fine - no problems - but when I touched the gas pedal, the 'check transmission' light went on, and the 'check engine' light flickered. Then it started shaking like a mechanical bull. I pulled back into the parking lot and let my dad try driving it.
"It's time to just dump it. It's undrivable."
So there it sits, still in the lot. We're going to a baptism in Illinois later in the afternoon; I'll take a few photos and post 'em in the evening. I haven't been to church in ages; indoctrinating newborns isn't really my idea of a celebration, but, hey, it's family. Family I probably won't see again until the next big funeral.
At this moment, my car sits at Brookfield Square. Dead. Again. I was lucky Williamz0r decided to drive me home yesterday; my phone wasn't charged, and I would've been stranded.
I'm supposed to work today at BBB from 9-2, but I decided to call in. My parents have no desire to trudge around in -30 degree weather and recharge the Trooper's battery, so I'm taking another personal day :D
I do work tonight, though, at the Woods. I actually like that job, and I don't work with Adriane :P
Looks like I updated a bit too soon about my fixed-up car. The damn thing wouldn't start this morning; I missed the bus, and, subsequently, Sociology because of it. I got a ride from my mom, but now she needs to duck out of work an hour early to take me to the Fran Woods. Goddamnit. I can't exactly call in, either, because everyone heard me whine about having to work on Valentine's already. :P Whatever, it's not like I'd be doing anything tonight, anyhow.
I used my credit card for the first time today - I bought 2 shirts and a blue skirt. Hee! Credit card debt is looming over the horizon! :D
My car finally broke down. I was driving to the nursing home right after I finished work at Bed Bath & Beyond, and the engine wouldn't start again after I turned it off to fix the transmission dealy. I had to walk a ways to find a phone, since I lost my cell phone a couple weeks ago and can't afford a new one yet, and ended up a half hour late to work. My dad had to pick me up, take me to work, then wait over an hour for a tow truck; he was pretty ticked (as though it were my fault). He suggested we scrap the Trooper, I learn stick to drive his P.O.S. truck, and he'd get a new one.
Yeah, Dad. I'll drive a vehicle with no heat, no A/C, no radio, no working lights on the dashboard, a broken passenger side door, and best of all, no functioning speedometer. He's had the thing for 12 years and won't get anything fixed. -_-
Whoo! I just finished taking a ridiculously long shower - so long that, at one point, my mother pounded on the bathroom doorand asked if I was all right. I really needed that extra time; working in food service makes me feel extra grimy :P I used my nice soaps, sugar scrub, hair product, and even shaved my legs for the first time since summer (no lie!) Even my muscles, which were tense from school and work, feel less achy! Huzzah!
School! This semester's going incredibly well so far. Each class seems really interesting and worthwhile - even sociology, which I picked just to fulfill a Social Science GER. We're required to attend a political event (which is right up my alley), and, on top of that, awesome Eric Englebart's in that class.
Prof: "I see some friendly faces in the crowd!" Eric: *points to self* "Like me!" Me: "Yeah, that's practically your name! Friendly Englebart!" Eric: "Frienglebart!"
Anyway, Media writing will give me a much-needed background in journalistic style writing (newspaper, broadcast, PR, advertising, especially since one of the possible career plans involves editing for those areas. (this week we're writing our resumes!) Astronomy will definitely prove light years more interesting than the course I took in high school. The prof's pretty serious, but he's a great teacher - more focused on demonstrating the material rather than just lecturing it. Roots of Words is headed by a spunky polish woman (with green streaks in her hair!) She actually had the whole class (about 40 students) design name tags, something which (I'm sure) no one's done since grade school. The class will be a lot of memorizing, but she's determined to make the experience more fun by incorporating games and class discussion into the lectures. I'm really excited about this class; I've never studied etymology, and I'm so eager to learn it all. *squee* I'm such an English nerd... Anyway, kudos to Williamz0r for choosing the most fascinating (non-English related) course of the semester: Philosophy of Religion. The prof. embodies Williamz0r's personality so well that I joked if he lost 100 lbs. and gave up his fondness for playboy-type chicks, he could be future Williamz0r sent back in time :D We're having 5 guest speakers throughout the semester: a Raelian (who did a spread for playboy), a Christian Scientist, a Nation of Islam-ist, a Spiritualist (who does on-the-spot readings for students), and a Satanist. Hot damn! I'll post a link to the syllabus - oh MAN it sounds good!
Other than that, I've been working my ass off lately. I got a big $200 paycheck from working in the towel room at BBB, and another $150 from the Franciscan Woods. The best part is that those paychecks alone paid for my text books. That's right!
***I only spent $300 on books this semester!***
Tuitions all paid ($1300 - huzzah for fafsa :D) and I'm probably going to completely pay off my laptop next month, because I don't feel like paying finance charges. What the hell, I've got more than enough in the bank. I don't need that much money right now, anyway, and by the time I do, I'll have earned it back from working. Hell, I'll have more by that time, since I'd be spending more on the laptop because of the finance charges.
So yes, life is grand right now! Williamz0r's the best guy on the planet, I'm happy with my jobs, school is fucking awesome, and I get to see Lindy, Dan Grabowski, and Eric on a weekly basis. *toasts* Here's to a cheery start of the new year!
Since I spent all of last week with my boys (and took tons of photos), I'm setting up an online photo album for all to see. It's much easier (and much more LJ-friendly) to load all the pictures onto a photo site rather than an LJ post, because, believe me, there's nearly 100. It'll probably be available in a few days - work has kinda taken over this week, since my managers desperately need me to organize the towel section in the stock room before inventory, and it's a god-awful mess.
In other news: + In the past month, I adopted two more guinea pigs: Cinnamon and Mocha. I have photos of them, and will post them. Unfortunately, Mocha came down with an illness and died a few days ago. She was my favorite (and she knew it). I miss her muchly. + I finally figured out next semester. Classes are as follows: JMC 201 - Media Writing, Astron 103 - Survey of Astronomy, Philos 250 - Philosophy of Religion, Sociol 102 - Social Problems in American Society, Linguis 211 - Roots of Words. I'm very excited! + I've fallen in love with sugar scrubs. They are the shiz. + I've also become quite addicted to GTA: San Andreas. How I love to beat up ho's and steal cop motorcycles!
Today was another one of those "ZOMG CONSUMER WHORE" kinda days. I just got my paycheck from the Franciscan Woods, and I went kinda spend crazy this morning. I drove to Boston Store, because they were handing out free Godiva chocolate bars and 30% coupons. Mom bought me a pair of brown workout pants and an orange sweatshirt, and I bought some long underwear and a neat pair of gold earrings. Since I didn't have any gold post earrings to match the ones I just bought, I decided to stop at Kohl's to find some cheap ones. I ended up picking out a bunch of uber-clearanced jewelry and belts, and was just wandering around when I saw a big display of wool peacoats for 60% off. Whoa. I've wanted one for the longest time, but damned if I can afford a $150 coat when I'm getting 8 bucks an hour. These were only $56, so I snatched one, ran to the back of the store, whipped out my cell phone, and began calculating the total cost of everything I picked up - $75. As soon as I had figured out the total, I heard an announcement saying that they're giving out $10 Kohl's cash coupons for every $50 spent today. :D I put all the cheap clearance stuff on hold and just bought the coat. Huzzah! AND when I was checking out, I saw little Angie from Pius working at one of the other registers! Hee! She's adorable.
I work tonight - gotta earn back all the money I spent today :D Huzzah for working with Lindy this weekend!
Edvard Munch should paint your portrait. You are a very emotional person. You are always up for a good talk with one of your friends. You don't like to keep things bottled up. Often, you are friendly and outgoing, but that can change very easily to being introverted and cold.
So! New job. I had to leave grammar early so I'd make it to work on time; I didn't think they'd look to kindly on tardiness for my first day :D I spent about 2 hours in a little classroom listening to my job description and expectations. According to my boss, I'll have to prepare wither dessert of salad for about 2 hours, serve food for an hour, then clean up the dining room and kitchen for the last hour, and since there're 2 other food service aides working with me, the shift goes by really fast. Found out that if they call me to work on a weekday I have off, I'll get $1.50 extra an hour. On weekends, I'd get $3.50. Whoa! Anyway, I then shadowed this chick named Katherine - we went to two dining rooms and dished out food for the residents; they were all really sweet - greeting me and talking amongst themselves. I definitely think I'll enjoy this job.
Hee, after dinner, the residents on one section of the floor all sat in a semi-circle around this one woman playing piano. They were singing and clapping along to the music :D When the woman started playing "You Are My Sunshine", I stopped and listened, as it's Williamz0r's favorite to sing to me :D I took that as a good sign.
Got out right at 7:15, with a rather nasty headache. I drove to Kopps, bought some kick-ass Spumoni custard, then spent the rest of the evening sprawled out on the couch in my pj's. I can't stress enough how awesome it is to get home after work and still have evening left to enjoy. I LOVE not getting home after 11 :D
Aw man, I just made an enormous post, and my internet pooped out while it was saving. RAGH!!! Now I've gotta try to remember it all.
Today was the shopping portion of the vacation. My mom and I spent over half the day wandering around the downtown area of Waseca, wandering into a bunch of little shops and boutiques (antique stores, knick-knack stores, flower shops...). I can't even remember all the things I bought: random christmas decorations, a cute rainbow beaded bracelet, foodstuffs...the list goes on! I regret not buying any skeins of yarn from this one little yarn shop we stopped at. The lady running it new just about everything about knitting and sold the most gorgeous yarn! My dad actually went with us and quipped something like, "My mouth is watering just walking in here!" Apparently the place used to be his dentist's office, but the lady thought he had some kind of yarn fetish :P
Ugh, I ate way too much again. I've got to knock it off, as I'm used to eating only one full meal a day; I can't afford more than that! I ate breakfast at the hotel, cookies/cider at the shops, gelato, hot dogs and candy at Grandma's, taco john's for dinner...yikes. I really can't believe that I'm hungry even now; by the time I get back home, I'll be 30 pounds heavier!
And since when do we have tornado warnings in November? Seriously, wtf? We had one in effect, here, from about 3 until 9, though the most severe weather we saw was a mild thunderstorm. (Right now it sounds kind of nasty outside - really windy and I think I hear rain/thunder) Not to mention that next week we're supposed to receive our snowfall. Damn global warming!
Anyway, I did promise more photos. They're really not all that interesting, but hey! Why not. I'll never understand, though, why Photobucket messes so much with the sizes; I can never make them uniform!
We'll be leaving for home sometime tomorrow morning. Williamz0r just informed me that our Logic exam is Monday and that there's a review session tomorrow at 7, so I'll be around for that. Wow, damn. It's really raining hard, now. :/ I can hear it pounding against the window. Ooh! Thunder! Hope that tornado warning doesn't restart...
My parents and I left at 7 this morning for Minnesota. I totally overpacked; I brought about 6 shirts and 3 pairs of pants just for 3 days of vacation :D Not only that, but I brought my gimpy iPod, cell phone (even though the area we're in is roaming), my (dad's) digital camera, and my iBook. Our hotel has free wireless internet (weefee!), which is from where I'm updating. Anyhow, while I did spend most of the 6 hour car ride sleeping, I did manage to snap a few photos just for the hell of it.
We stopped at a few places along the way: McDonald's, a random amish store (huzzah for chocolate (wow, I totally forgot how to spell that word) covered toffee!), and this mall in Rochester that we always visit. I got THE BEST hot white chocolate ever. Whoa. We got to my grandma's at about 4, ate chocolate cake, stopped at the hotel to check-in, ate dinner, sat and talked for a while, went for coffee, and now I'm a-chillin in the hotel. I swear, I've eaten more today than I usually do in 3! I have no idea what's happening tomorrow, but I'm sure I'll have more photos, just because I'm a nerd like that.
And I'd love you all forever if you send me some text messages!
60 people seated in groups listening for 8 hours about hospital policy and benefits. w00t. High points included breaks (breakfast, lunch, AND snack! Huzzah for delicious lasagna!) and small group. The people I sat with rocked; they kept making snide, sarcastic comments about the powerpoint slides and the ungodly boring-ass lectures. Too bad none of them will be working at the Franciscan Woods with me. I learned that Covenent Healthcare was founded by a group of spunky nuns, not to stick myself with contaminated needles, and not to say 'polak' 'kosher' or 'retarded' in the company of co-workers or customers. Oh, and apparently it's bad customer service to yell a patient's age or the word "colonoscopy".
Tonight at 6 I've scheduled a hair appointment, because I desperately need a new style. Am anxious, but excited nonetheless. Will post photos if all goes well :D
My dad ran a buttload of errands this morning/afternoon. We drove to some candle store that was going out of business and had all their candles 80% off! :O I bought way too much crapola, but that's nothing new. I think I picked up a couple Evergreen candles and some oil lamps...I don't remember. The sale took place in this enormous warehouse; there were tons of boxes of candles everywhere, stacked about 20 feet high. I bought lunch for both of us at Chipotle (the one on Capitol, not my old store :P), went to Elmbrook to get my TB test read (no TB on me!), then we drove to the US Cellular so I could either fix my phone or buy a new one. I decided to pick out a new one, because the Kyocera I have is a piece o' crap. Because I'm a big nerd, I took photos of it:
I just got back from taking the written examination for the library technician job. I was so excited; I thought "Wow, I must effing ROCK for them to call ME back! I bet they appreciated all the experience I got working clerical duties at the hospital. Man, I got this in the BAG!" Yeah, so I walk into the library and see a bunch of signs pointing to where I need to take the exam. "Huh, there must be a few other people applying. No biggie! I still got this!" So I walk into the room...40 effing other people!! OMGWTFBBQ!!1!!11 They must've called back everyone that could spell their names correctly. Poo. Turns out this job requires some huge, involved process - callbacks for this test, a typing test, then interviews, then some other stuff. Bah, I wanted to walk out; no WAY I'll get that job. :P The tests were easy enough - some alphabetizing, some math equations etc. We'll see how it goes.
I drove home down Greenfield, and noticed a bunch of signs outside the ol' porn store. Protestors who have nothing better to do on a Thursday night (who buys porn on a thursday night, anyhow?) I normally don't care, but the morons had their little kids outside with them. 7:00 at night. It's dark. It's really freaking cold, and the only thing separating the porn store from busy Greenfield is a tiny narrow sidewalk. WTF?! WHY would you endanger your kids like that? They don't give a rats ass about your protest. Leave them at home where it's warm, and there's no chance of them wandering into the road. Ugh, pissed me off.
I ducked out of work early, so I was only there from 10 until 3. Thank jeebus that Suzie and Jennifer didn't call in, or I doubt I'd have been allowed. Wendy let me take it easy during my shift; I pretty much just folded towels for those 5 hours. I'm probably going to the doctor this evening when my mom gets home.
In other news, I received a letter in the mail yesterday from the city of West Allis, stating that I have a written examination scheduled for that awesome library job I applied for a few weeks ago. Huzzah! I left a note at work pleading anyone to take half my shift so I can go; those appointments can't be rescheduled.
Fuck. I'm sick. I really, really tried to stay healthy, but some punk-ass germs found their way through. Damn it.
Just got home from work. I'm not even sure why I bothered going, but it turned out alright. My managers just stuck me on the customer service register with my buddy Sarah; there were only a few customers, so I really didn't have to do much work. Even Alex came to visit at one point, and, for once, I was able to talk for more than 30 seconds :D Christ, I had this one woman come up to my register. I rang up her items, and she hands me some coupons from Linens 'n Things. No problem, we accept competitor coupons, except that one was for a Linens 'n Things charge card. I explain to her that I can't use that particular coupon because we can't obviously run their cards through our system. She gives me this look, like I'm completely insane, and asks me why she can't use it. I explain, again, that the coupon can only be used at a Linens 'n Things store, because we CANT SWIPE THEIR CARDS. The convo continued: "Aren't I at Linens 'N Things?" "No, maam, you're at Bed Bath and Beyond. We're a competitor to Linens 'N Things." "But you used the other coupon." "Yes, we accept competitor's coupons, but we can't do that one because it requires a credit card from there, and our system doesn't acknowledge competitor credit cards" "I've got the card right here! Do I swipe it myself or give it to you?" "The card won't go through either way. It's from a different store; it's like trying to use a Kohl's card at a Boston Store." "Oh, so you are Linens 'N Things, just with a different name?" "...No, maam. We're a completely different store. We're a competitor."
I swear to god, it took me and 2 managers to convince this woman that she was not, in fact, inside a Linens 'N Things. As soon as she left, one of the managers, Brad, muttered "Yeah, it's easy to miss the enormous fucking sign right over the entrance...and hanging from the ceiling...and on the products, our nametags..." etc, then proceeded to wander around aimlessly asking where he was. :D So yeah, work would've been just fine had we not needed to put away 80 carts of freight -_- I hate closing. We always end up staying a half hour to 45 minutes later than scheduled. Being sick makes it all the worse. Ive got an 8 hour shift on Saturday, three 6 hour shifts next week (mon, thurs, fri), and another 8 hour that sunday. Shoot me. Shoot me, now. :P
Wow, I'm so relaxed this evening. I've been curled up on my bed in my pj's, sipping hot chocolate/eating raspberry truffle ice cream, blasting Death Cab, Postal Service, and Keane on my awesome Logitech speakers, and now I'm updating LJ by the glow of my iBook and candlelight. *happy sigh* I've really forgotten how to unwind - I've been so preoccupied with school and work etc. that I haven't taken a night to just chill. I really wanted to get some sewing or knitting done tonight, but eh...maybe later.
I actually touched base with Adam and Steph today, which rocked. I haven't talked to Adam in a good couple of weeks, and haven't seen Steph since last semester :/ I'm a bad friend. *hugs both of you* I really, really hope I can see you two over Halloween.
I'm still (semi) patiently awaiting a call-back from the Franciscan Woods. I got a phone interview with them last week and they said I'd hear from them this week sometime. I'd LOVE that job - preparing and serving dinner for sick elderly people. I actually hope I can work Christmas or Thanksgiving; I wonder how many of the residents will even get visitors those days. Not to mention I'd get a great shift (3:15 to 7:15) and about 8 or 9 bucks an hour. Much improved from my crappy 8 hour shifts (I hate working until 11:30 pm) and $7.50 from BBB. :P AND retail blows, especially around xmas. I would miss the discount, though.
Oh, and if anyone wants to make me a new icon of my oogly self, it'd be greatly appreciated! *bats eyelashes* I've been told that this one makes me look like a bald giraffe, and I don't have a good paint program or anything like that on my laptop to change it.
1. I'll respond with something random about you. 2. I'll tell you what song/movie reminds me of you. 3. I'll pick a flavor of jello to wrestle with you in. 4. I'll say something that only makes sense to you and me. 5. I'll tell you my first/clearest memory of you. 6. I'll tell you what animal you remind me of. 7. I'll ask you something that I've always wondered about you. 8. If I do this for you, you must post this on your journal.
Yeah, school, work, and people-seeing have been eating up all my LJ time :D I don't mind - I like to keep busy. Everythings great so far - school (with the exception of Logic) seems do-able without too much trouble. If anyone knows elementary logic well, let me know; I'll really need help :D I love, love my grammar class - it's not as easy as I expected! I'm catching on, though, and really looking forward to taking a more difficult one next year. Plants...er...bizarre-ass lecture, that's all I can really say. Complit rocks - we get to read Shakespeare and Wordsworth :D Yoga has to be my favorite, even though I have to wake up at 5:30 to catch the bus on time. It's really funny how I can do a Full extended side angle, but I can't for the life of me touch my fingers to my toes. Work...eh, my opinion changes from shift to shift. Sometimes I really love it - I get plenty of projects to do and the time just flies by. Other shifts are either ridiculously slow, or so ungodly busy that I end up trying to help 8 customers at once (Alex can attest to this). My co-workers, though, are fantastic, especially this one girl, Stephanie. We just spend the whole shift talking and laughing - it's great :D Anyhow, the job gets my bills paid, so I need to deal with it. I scheduled an appointment with my advisor to see if there's the slightest chance of an internship anywhere I've seen quite a bit of Alex and Mike as of late. We've found a new haunt now that Jeff's away - the Webb's on North Ave. w00t! We try to go at least once a week, but work (and the lack of a driver's license on Alex's part) makes the arrangment a little difficult. The staff effing rocks; they must think we're absolutely insane. The one pink-haired chick keeps walking by our booth at the most bizarre points in our conversations (ie. "If I had to choose, I'd rather be thrown in a wood chipper than starve to death") :D
